Accessibility Statement for Advancing your counselling practice (D230)
Mode of study
Printed materials are provided in the form of the module book. All of this module’s additional study materials are online. Online materials are composed of pages of text with images, audio/video clips (all with transcripts/subtitles as well as audio descriptions for video extracts), diagrams and figures, interactive media (such as word clouds, drag-and-drop exercises), animations, and multiple-choice self-assessed quizzes. Online materials include links to external resources, online forums and tutorial rooms.
Tuition strategy
This module provides a range of learning events, such as online tutorials and workshops. Online events will be audio-recorded where possible. Although not compulsory, we strongly encourage you to attend all tutorials as these provide important learning experiences.
Working with others
You’ll be encouraged to engage with other students throughout the module to foster your personal and professional development. This will be facilitated through the module forum and learning events. Working with others will promote shared learning and foster your reflexivity around specific module topics relevant to working as a counsellor. It will also include small-group case discussions and counselling skills practice. You will receive guidance and support on discussing counselling work while maintaining client confidentiality and sharing appropriately within a counselling training context.
Practical work
Counselling practice is a required component of assessment. You need to complete a minimum of 25 hours of counselling practice across the module. You must also evidence the required amount and frequency of supervision of your counselling practice. You will evidence this by submitting the Portfolio of Hours, which is one component of the end-of-module assessment (EMA). You will be given time across the module to complete this Portfolio.
Please note that the module requires you to self-source your practice placements and practice settings and be responsible for meeting the requirement for practice hours.
As part of the EMA, you must also submit an audio-recorded extract (totalling 10 minutes) of your work with a client; this will likely require you to record more than one session. Your supervisor is required to confirm that you gained written consent for the audio recording and its use in training.
Diagrams and other visual content
The study materials contain diagrams, graphs and many images (photographs, drawings, etc). Reading and understanding the diagrams and graphs is an important part of the study of this module. We provide descriptions for all diagrams, graphs, and images.
Finding information
You will be required to search for and use third-party material online, and we assess this in some of the assessments.
Assessment
This module has five tutor-marked assignments and an end-of-module assessment. You will also be required to complete the Portfolio of counselling and supervision hours as part of your end-of-module assessment.
Feedback
You’ll receive feedback from your tutor on your submitted tutor-marked assignments (TMAs). This will help you to reflect on your TMA performance. You should refer to it to help you prepare for your next assignment.
Schedule
We structure all University modules to a set timetable, and you’ll need time management skills to keep your studies on track. We’ll support you in developing these skills.
Specialist software
You will be supported to use free specialist software to enable you to edit and anonymise the submitted audio recording of your work with a client as part of the end-of-module assessment. You will also be supported in using an online platform to log your client and supervision hours.
Conditions of professional practice
This module requires you to comply with The Fitness to Practise Policy that applies to the qualification. This policy is about meeting professional standards, including your character, professional competence, academic and professional conduct and health. states how the university confirms suitability for training and education, registration or employment with a Professional Statutory or Regulatory Body (PSRB) or a professional counselling body for the counselling programme and how we will respond to concerns about our students and learners meeting professional standards.
