Accessibility Statement for Science: concepts and practice (S112)
Mode of study
All of this module’s study materials are online. Online materials are composed of pages of text with images; audio and video clips of several minutes long (all with transcripts/subtitles); diagrams; interactive media; animations; and simple self-assessed quizzes along with activities involving the use of external websites and library resources. Online materials also include links to external resources, online forums and online tutorial rooms.
Tuition strategy
This module has online tutorials. Although not compulsory, tutorials will help you consolidate your learning.
Working with others
You’ll be required to work with other students and this is assessed. This includes looking at, and commenting on, others’ work; reflecting on others’ comments on your work; and/or working together with fellow learners on a project/task.
Practical work
Online and home-based practical work forms a required component of assessment. This includes some collaborative group work. The module extends your use of an online laboratory and associated tools including online notebooks. Alternative study materials have been prepared to enable students who are unable to access these tools and activities to successfully study the module.
Mathematical and scientific expressions and notations
Mathematical and scientific symbols and expressions are used throughout the module and you will be required to use such notation within assessment.
Diagrams and other visual content
The study materials contain a considerable number of diagrams, graphs and photographs. Reading from, interpreting and producing examples of these (including by hand) is an important part of the study of this module and is assessed. Descriptions are provided for visual content that the module team considers key, including certain figures; interactives; and, in some instances, videos – in other instances the figure captions/transcripts for videos are sufficient.
Finding information
You’ll be required to search for, and make use of, third-party material online and this is assessed. Alternatives for required/assessed research material can be provided to enable you to meet the learning outcomes of the module.
Assessment
This module has tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) that you must submit via the online TMA service and a remote exam.
Feedback
You’ll receive feedback from your tutor on your submitted Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs). This will help you to reflect on your TMA performance. You should refer to it to help you prepare for your next assignment.
Schedule
All Open University modules are structured according to a set timetable and you’ll need time-management skills to keep your studies on track. You’ll be supported in developing these skills.
Specialist software
This module uses specialist symbols that are not covered by standard accessibility tools. The module materials and assessment ask you to use the following specialist software/symbols: some bespoke interactive packages including the JavaScript Molecule Editor (JSME) and JSmol and may not be fully accessible as a result. Where possible alternative versions are provided to allow students who are unable to use these packages to meet the learning outcomes.
