Dr Naomi Anna WatsonÌý isÌý a nursing Ìýacademic inÌý the Faculty of WELS.ÌýHerÌýÌýresearch interests span a range of areas acrossÌý DistanceÌýÌýNursing Education and Practice,ÌýCultural Competence, Ethnicity andÌýnursing careers, and Black women’s health and wellbeing in the context of health inequalities, Diversity, Ethnicity, and Inclusion. Her most recent research projectsÌý focussed on: 1.Student nurses, nursing curriculums and emergency responses to Covid-19.Ìý 2.ÌýÌýDistance nursing education and the student experienceÌýof Covid-19 drawing onÌýnursing and social work students and alumni as professional studentÌýpractitioners.Ìý

NaomiÌý is a Doctoral supervisior, ofÌýÌýstudents researching any of the above areas and is open to receive students for supervisionÌýas appropriate.Ìý

She is also aÌý research Ìýmentor, supportingÌýnewly qualified Doctoral candidates as research affiliates and staff new to writing for textbook preparation and publication.Ìý

University Roles

ÌýÌýDeputy Associate Dean, teaching excellence, Naomi'sÌý recent role included contribution to the strategic direction of tutor development and student learning and teaching. She actively ensures quality outcomes that contribute to improving student participation and success while also enabling a better understanding of the student voice.Ìý Ìý

ÌýÌýMedia Consultant for the BAFTAÌýnominated BBC's Black and British programme, co-produced with the OU. The programme won the Grierson AwardÌý and is also now available on NETFIX, since 2023.

ÌýFaculty'sÌýExternal Examiner trainer for the OU'sÌýAdvanced HE's External Examiner Training programme, she contributed to delivering this trainng across all four Nations of the UK, served by the OU, thusÌýexpanding the numbers of academics trained according to the standards of Advance HE.Ìý Ìý

Academic Conduct Officer for the Faculty, contributing to the university's quality assurance processes in the context of academic misconduct and plagiarism.Ìý

SheÌýholds a PhD InÌýNursing fromÌýDeMontfort University's Mary Seacole Research Centre, and a Masters in PublicÌýSector Management from the Aston Business School,ÌýUniversity of Aston in Birmingham

ÌýAdditionaly, NaomiÌýÌýcontributesÌýto the Facuty's Masters and Doctoral ProgrammesÌýas monitor, supervisor and VIVA Chair. She participated inÌýÌýthe Faculty'sÌý early establishment andÌý ongoingÌýdevelopment of the undergraduateÌý Health, Social Care andÌýÌýNursing curricula spanning a period of 15 years. She has been a core member of production teams including the flagship innovative Future Nurse Curricumum (FNC) development, authoring and co-authoring a number of teaching and learning materials, whiich isÌý now successfully launched into presentation. Naomi was previouslyÌýmodule chair forÌýan innovative level 2Ìý theory only module which Ìýsuccessfully served a variety ofÌý student cohorts, including undergraduate RN students,ÌýRN Degree apprentice students and Nursing AssociatesÌý(NA's).Ìý ÌýShe has supported postgraduate Master's programmes in the faculty,ÌýÌýand continues to contribute to aÌýnumber ofÌý other undergrduate modules in presentation as monitor, internal examiner, Lead portfolio assessor andÌý forum facilitator.Ìý

Prior to being appointed at the Open University, Naomi was a Senior Lecturer and School Lead for interprofessional Education, in another HEI, collaborating across two universities toÌýÌýcoordinate a successful innovative community Ìýlearning and teaching initiative forÌýcombined medical, nursing, and other allied health professionalÌýundergraduate students. Naomi also developed andÌýÌýledÌý aÌýÌýsuccessfulÌý innovative development of Primary Care Nursing education for final year undergraduates, which became an essential criteria for RNÌý employment in community nursing environments.Ìý

Naomi hasÌýpracticedÌýÌýin the NHS as a Registered Nurse (RN Adult), a Senior Midwife and a Specialist Practitioner in Health Visiting. She is also aÌý Clinical Practice Educator and currently holds NMC registration.Ìý

Research methods include qualitative/quantitative and mixed methodologies, with experience ofÌýÌýnarratives, Ìýstorytelling and participatory/action researchÌýenquiries. Cross cuttingÌýÌýinterests range acrossÌý discourses inclusive of intersectionality, and the extent to whichÌýÌýgender,Ìý race, social classÌý and other characterstics impact on the experiences of global majority people in health, education, social care and nursing practice.Ìý

She was an invited speaker to the RetiredÌý Caribbean Nurses Conference, London in 2015, and the WindrushÌý Conference 70 years of the NHS, Birmingham University in 2018.ÌýÌý
