Studying full time allows you to fully focus on your research project, collaborate with Faculty and immerse yourself in University resources.
Residence requirements
The majority of our full-time students are based within a commutable distance of our Walton Hall campus in Milton Keynes.
Milton Keynes is a vibrant, modern city with exceptional facilities for learning, business and recreation. The University campus provides a focused opportunity to work and study, with state-of-the-art research equipment, an outstanding library, a nursery, high-quality catering, numerous sports facilities and green spaces.
Milton Keynes has a wide variety of residential accommodation, and plenty within easy reach of the campus. Although we have no student accommodation on campus, we have an accommodation advisor who can help postgraduate research students navigate the private rental process; please contact the Graduate School if you would like to be put in touch with them.
Some research areas offer distance learning, with each faculty independently deciding whether they can provide this option. If you are interested in pursuing a research degree via distance learning, then we recommend that you first spend some time identifying your intended research area, which also contain details of subject-specific contacts.
Unfortunately, the need to evidence regular in-person engagement on University premises prevent us from offering this option to students on the Student Route visa.
Can I work while I study?
Full-time students are expected to commit to spending a minimum of 37 hours per week on their studies, although they are also entitled to 40 days of annual leave per year. Because a full-time research degree is a significant commitment, students may spend no more than 6 hours per week in additional employment.
How long does a full-time research degree take?
The maximum length of time you can take to complete a PhD is 48 months (4 years) whilst the minimum length is 24 months (2 years). Most students take somewhere between 3–4 years.
For an MPhil, the maximum length of time you can take is 36 months (3 years) and the maximum length is 15 months (1.25 years). Most students take somewhere between 2–3 years.
If you are applying for funding, you should be aware that the funded period may be less than your maximum registration period.
